EPA WaterSense certification for California homes

CHEERS has partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to bring the WaterSense program to California.

EPA WaterSense: the basics

WaterSense labeled homes are at least 30% more water efficient than typical new construction. Builders join the WaterSense program prior to home construction and incorporate water efficient features into the home’s design. The water features are independently verified by a WaterSense certified ECC Rater. A WaterSense home includes:

  • Independent verification – Trained ECC Raters conduct independent inspections to ensure WaterSense labeled homes meet EPA criteria
  • Fixtures that perform – WaterSense labeled fixtures are certified to use less water and perform as well or better than standard models.
  • Faster hot water – Efficient plumbing distribution systems get hot water to the tap faster. Learn more
  • Outdoor irrigation – High-performing landscapes are designed to be low-maintenance and water-efficient without sacrificing curb appeal. Learn more

Why get certified as a WaterSense verifier?

As California faces increased water sustainability issues, demand for participation in EPA’s WaterSense program will grow. ECC Raters play a critical role in a home’s water efficiency certification. ECC rating companies providing WaterSense verification in addition to Title 24 ECC inspections will be their builder’s one-stop-shop for third-party quality assurance.

How do I get certified as a WaterSense verifier?

All CHEERS ECC Raters are eligible to conduct WaterSense field inspections after completing our online WaterSense training program. This training is provided by CHEERS and is free.

ECC Raters can sign up and complete the EPA and CHEERS training videos today! Training course duration is typically 1-2 hours.
