And how CHEERS helps you get it done
You can’t test what you’re not certified to handle. If you’re inspecting or verifying HVAC systems, EPA 608 Type II certification is required. It’s a federal rule for working with refrigerants and a key step toward becoming a certified HERS Rater.
CHEERS is an EPA-approved provider. You can complete the training and exam online, right alongside your HERS certification. In many regions, you may also qualify for free training through local programs.
What Is EPA 608 Certification?
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires certification for anyone who services HVAC systems that contain refrigerants. This helps protect the environment by reducing emissions during system installation, maintenance, or inspection.
There are four types of EPA 608 certifications:
- Type I – Small appliances
- Type II – High-pressure systems (most residential units)
- Type III – Low-pressure systems
- Universal – Covers all three types
HERS Raters need Type II to do their job legally and effectively.
Why HERS Raters Need It
As a HERS Rater, you may be required to:
- Inspect HVAC installations
- Verify refrigerant charge
- Confirm that systems meet Energy Code (Title 24) requirements
If you inspect any component that could release refrigerant, EPA 608 certification is required. Skipping this step could mean delays, fines, or lost work.
